A holiday for the palate

territorio di sirmione The cuisine of Lago di Garda is at its best in the famous restaurants and hotels of Sirmione: here it is possible to taste all the famous exclusive fish dishes that attract gourmets from all over the world to this beautiful small peninsula. There are more than 30 species of fish in the lake. The most esteemed is without doubt the much sought after large carp which feeds exclusively on crustaceans and is found only in these waters. The excellence of its meat, appreciated by historic figures such as the emperor Tiberius, Galeazzo Visconti, Federico II, Maria of Austria and Joseph II, is enhanced by cooking on the grill over embers of olive wood. For the most gratifying experience simply add a little olive oil of Garda without any spice. Some however prefer it boiled. One thing is certain: both recipes are worth trying!
Then there are brown trout, common whitefish, sardines, European perch and black bass, and the famous Italian bleak, once conserved in salt and nowadays prepared preferably “in saor” (fried). Eel, trout, European roach, European chub and the common rudd available when in season.

ristoranti di sirmione

The wines of mythical fame.
These delicious dishes are accompanied by the highly esteemed vines of Sirmione, the most outstanding of which is the Lugana of mythical fame, a white wine obtained from the Turbiana vine – and appreciated since the time of Catullus – which assumes unique characteristics due to the particular climatic conditions and form of the land that would be possible to reproduce elsewhere. It is a truly exclusive wine of which three types are produced: Lugana DOC with its fruity bouquet and initially vivacious flavour; Lugana Superiore, straw-coloured with brilliant reflections of gold, which requires at least one year of ageing in wood or steel vats; Lugana Spumante, dry and structured.  Guided tours of the wine producers and organised wine tasting events introduce the “normal” tourist and the wine enthusiast to the secrets of this unique wine.
