Health and wellbeing at the Spa: from a “hole” in the water…
It is 24 August 1889. A Venetian diver by the name of Procopio dives into the waters of Lake Garda and at a depth of 20 metres drives a pipe into a rock from which steaming hot water issues forth. This is how the long fascinating story of the Spa of Sirmione starts, a spa which has never ceased growing due to the enthusiasm, passion and perseverance of the persons that work there and have worked there in the past. So from a simple hotel, in which guests could take therapeutic baths, the spa facilities have expanded to 30,000 sq m with more than 1,000 sq m of pools and 50,000 sq m of green areas, investing constantly in research, the conception and development of new therapeutic and technological solutions.
This is one of the great vocations of the Spa of Terme di Sirmione: utilisation of the great natural resource of the water, using it to the best effect and developing the most suitable technologies to maximise its benefits.
It is an important story which never would have happened if Procopio had not made his “hole” in the water…
The water of Terme di Sirmione

From the mountain top to the depths of the lake: the Water of Sirmione
It takes years and years for the spa water of Sirmione to complete its entire cycle, from 800 metres up at the catchment area of Monte Baldo to 2,500 metres below sea level where it acquires its precious minerals and increases in temperature finally to issue from the Boiola source. Natural water, hyperthermal, with its temperature of no less than 69°C, full of mineral substances with numerous therapeutic properties, the water of the Sirmione spa, classified as sulphurous bromine-iodine salt water, is used in therapies and treatments administered with great professionalism and technologically advanced instruments in the spa facilities.
The Spa of Sirmione
More than 400 employees and collaborators, 40 specialist doctors, two spa centres – Terme Catullo and Terme Virgilio -, a spa Wellbeing Centre – Aquaria – and three hotels with Aquaria Club and spa departments – the five-star Grand Hotel Terme, the four-star Hotel Sirmione and the three-star Hotel Fonte Boiola -; a total of 600,000 presences per year, more than 1,000,000 treatments per year. Thanks to the extensive experience in spa services, the quality of the structures and services, the professionalism of the operators, Terme di Sirmione S.p.A., is now a solid growing concern. All the spa treatments are under special agreement with the National Health Service; scientific consultants who are holders of prestigious university professorships devote their efforts to the research and development of therapeutic protocols. Famous Italian centre for the treatment of rhinogenous deafness – 4,000 children under treatment every year -, for the treatment of respiratory, rheumatic, vascular and dermatological ailments. Terme di Sirmione is a centre for prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, research and development of products based on spa water, of international fame and unique in Italy.
‘Ecothermalism’
UNI EN ISO 9001:2000 certification for quality and UNI EN ISO 14001:2004 certification for the environment, Terme di Sirmione S.p.A. has also created the TEF – Terme di Sirmione Ecological Footprint – a special management system to identify all the environmental aspects connected with its activities, the outcome of which is made public through a dedicated “Environmental Balance”. thanks to its commitment to the environment the company was the first in Italy to introduce the new concept of “ecothermalism”: a combination of the best spa tradition and environmental sustainability.
